How to unsend a Gmail message you just sent
- Send your message from Gmail.
- Find the “Message sent” notification in the lower-left corner.
- Click Undo before the notification disappears.
- Gmail reopens the message as a draft.
- Correct the message, discard it, or send it again.
The recipient does not receive the message when Undo succeeds. Gmail is cancelling a short delivery delay, not pulling the message out of the recipient's inbox.
Set Gmail Undo Send to 30 seconds
- Open Gmail on a computer.
- Select the gear icon, then See all settings.
- Stay in the General tab and find Undo Send.
- Set the Send cancellation period to 5, 10, 20, or 30 seconds.
- Scroll to the bottom and select Save Changes.
How Soft Send gives you more time
Soft Send solves the short Undo window by delaying supported Gmail messages before they leave Gmail. Send normally and the extension places the message in a queue with a live countdown.
- 1 minute free: get twice Gmail's maximum window without changing how you send.
- Up to 1 hour with Pro: choose a longer or custom delay for important messages.
- Edit before delivery: reopen a queued email, change it, and send again with a fresh countdown.
- Catch mistakes: receive a warning when your text mentions an attachment but no file is attached. Pro adds more risk checks.
- Stay in control: cancel, send now, or pause with Pro while the email is queued.
Gmail Undo Send versus Soft Send
| Feature | Gmail | Soft Send |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum window | 30 seconds | 1 minute to 1 hour |
| Return to editing | During Undo only | During the full delay |
| Missing attachment warning | Limited Gmail prompt | Included in Free |
| Queue controls | Undo only | Edit, cancel, send now, and Pro pause |
Can you unsend an email after delivery?
No. Neither Gmail nor Soft Send can remove an ordinary email that has already reached the recipient. Soft Send works by preventing delivery until its countdown ends. Read what to do when Gmail's 30-second window has already expired.
Replies and attachments
Soft Send also delays supported replies, forwards, and messages with attachments. They remain in their original Gmail composer so Gmail can preserve their thread and files. Keep that Gmail tab and draft open until delivery.
Frequently asked questions
How long do you have to undo send in Gmail?
Gmail supports 5, 10, 20, or 30 seconds. The default is commonly 5 seconds, so change the setting if you want the maximum built-in window.
Can I make Gmail Undo Send longer than 30 seconds?
Gmail itself stops at 30 seconds. Soft Send creates a longer pre-delivery cancellation window for supported messages, from 1 minute to 1 hour.
Why is Gmail Undo Send not showing?
The cancellation time may have expired, the notification may have been dismissed, or the message may have been sent from another email client.
Can I undo send a Gmail if I forgot to attach the file?
Yes, while Gmail or Soft Send is still holding it. Soft Send also warns you before delivery when the message mentions an attachment but no file is attached.
